The History of the Leumit Health Fund
The story of Leumit Health Services begins with a group of doctors who decided one day in 1933 to establish an independent health fund. About a year later, Leumit Health Services merged with the National Workers' Union, creating a single health fund whose purpose was to provide health services to members of the Revisionist movement who found their way out of the Clalit Health Fund. Over time, the health plan's services were opened to all citizens of the State of Israel who wish to be insured by it, regardless of political or social status.
Leumit Health Fund's Past Activity
Leumit Health Services initially operated in the cities, after in the first years after the establishment of the State of Israel, it also operated in the various transit camps, development towns and immigrant settlements – all of which were spread out in certain areas at the time and served as a shelter for thousands of new immigrants from the East and the West. In addition, residents of Judea and Samaria, the Gaza Strip, as well as certain minority villages in the Galilee region also benefited from the medical services of the Leumit Health Fund. Scope of work and activity in the 2000s
Leumit Health Services operates about 350 branches throughout the country. Members of the health plan are invited to receive medical services from the health plan's doctors as well as from independent doctors who work in cooperation with the health plan. In addition to operating a complete array of branches, doctors, nurses, and other employees, Leumit Health Services operates several other services and activities: a chain of pharmacies with about 150 pharmacies operated in the health plan's branches, a chain of dental clinics, optical stores for purchasing products and tests, as well as an array of complementary medicine treatments such as reflexology, homeopathy, chiropractic, and more.
